The former
Harland and Wolfe shipyard of Titanic fame was once one of the
chief employers in industrial Belfast. The site is easily identifiable
anywhere in the city because of its two huge yellow cranes that
still dominate the skyline. The cranes are biblically nicknamed
Samson and Goliath respectively. They have become synonymous
with East Belfast, standing like post industrial monuments to
an era of heavy industry and sectarian employment practices.
